Walking Aids
Many patients will use the following walking aids to aid mobility after surgery. These provide stability and help reduce pressure on the joint during early recovery.
-
Daily Living Aids
There are some simple gadgets and daily living aids that allow you to do everyday tasks like dressing much easier while you have limited mobility:
- Sock aids
- Reachers
- Long shoehorns
- Household trolleys – making moving things around your home easy while you are navigating using crutches
-
Pain Relief
Managing pain and swelling effectively can make a big difference to your comfort and recovery in the early weeks. Ensure you chat to your doctor or sugeon before surgery to ensure these products align with their advise for your specific needs.
- Gel ice packs
- Heat packs or heating pads (for later-stage stiffness)
- Supportive wedge or elevation pillows
-
Shower Stool or Chair
Standing in the shower or getting into a bath can be difficult during the first few weeks of recovery. A shower stool allows you to sit safely while bathing and other bathing aids can assist in the bathroom.
-
Raised Toilet Seat
Bending too low can place strain on your hip or knee. A raised toilet seat helps maintain a safer sitting position and can assist when sitting down and standing. Other toilet aids such as a urinal or bed pan may be helpful also.
-
Overbed Table
An overbed table allows you to keep items such as water, medication, books, or meals within easy reach while resting and also allow you to eat easily in bed. Other Bedroom Aids such as bed raisers may also be helpful.
2. Should You Rent or Buy Equipment?
Many patients only need equipment for a short period after surgery and renting equipment may therefore make work best for your needs. The following lists the key reasons for renting and purchasing.
Renting EquipmentRental equipment can be a practical option if:
|
Purchasing EquipmentBuying may be suitable if:
|
If you are unsure which option is best, our team at Livewell can help guide you, or if you are based in Auckland you can call or email our customer care team and they can talk you through our products online. You can also often find second-hand equipment available on websites such as trademe.co.nz, and local pharmacies and stockists may have a range available in store.
3. Preparing Your Home Before Surgery
Making a few small adjustments before surgery can make returning home easier.
Set up a Comfortable Recovery Area
Choose a chair or bed that is easy to get in and out of. Chair raisers can help make a regular chair a little higher and easier to get off, especially following hip surgery. Keep commonly used items within reach, and consider getting a reacher so you do not need to bend down if you drop something.
Reduce Fall Risks
Good lighting in the areas you will be recovering is important. We also recommend removing the following:
- Loose rugs
- Electrical cords
- Clutter in walkways
Plan Bathroom Safety
Consider the following when setting up your bathroom for your recovery period:
- A shower stool
- Extra grab rails to help you get in and out of the shower and off the toilet (suction ones work well as a temporary measure)
- Non-slip mats
- A raised toilet seat if recommended by your healthcare provider
Arrange Help if Needed
You may need assistance with:
- Meals
- Shopping
- Household tasks
- Transport to appointments
Planning ahead can make recovery less stressful. Even if you have friends or family nearby, it is a good idea to talk with them ahead of time about the kind of support you may need and for how long, so everyone feels prepared. If you do not have someone who can assist you, there are support options available and you may be eligible for short-term home support services which can help with things like personal care, meals, and household tasks during your recovery. Your GP or hospital team can help arrange this before your surgery so you have the right support in place when you return home. There are also services available such as Driving Miss Daisy that can help you during this period.
4. Tips for a Safer Recovery
Follow the advice given by your surgeon or physiotherapist.
General tips include:
- Use walking aids as instructed
- Avoid bending or twisting too far
- Take your time when standing or sitting
- Keep frequently used items nearby
- Stay active with recommended exercises
If you experience significant pain, swelling, or concerns about your recovery, contact your surgeon or healthcare provider.
5. Getting Equipment Before Surgery
Many patients prefer to organise equipment before their operation, so everything is ready when they return home.
Livewell can help with:
- Equipment advice
- Short-term rental options
- Purchasing mobility and recovery aids
- Delivery within the Auckland region
